Vice President and Ruler of Dubai Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid recently launched the much-anticipated Arab Social Media Awards.
The competition is aimed at connecting the positive potential of social media to the Arab world. There are 20 categories based on social media activity and initiatives by both businesses and individuals, and the awards are judged on these three criteria: creativity, communication and impact. The much-coveted “Social Media Personality of the Year” title will be given to the most ‘influential online figure’ in the region.
According to The National, Sheikh Mohammed said that these change-makers are a “powerful force for good”, bringing wisdom, positivity and creativity into the culture. While, he says, the Arab world has not yet fully embraced the potential of digital media, this competition is set to showcase the successful examples. Others can therefore use these inspirational people as a basis on which they can maximize the advantages for Arab society.
The awards are said to shine a spotlight on the most integral social media initiatives in the Arab world, promoting ‘best practices’ for social channels. It will take place at an annual ceremony in Dubai.
Sheikh Mohammed has said he wants the prize to inspire and add real value to current efforts, developing all sectors and channels of the Arab media. The awards are a way of stressing the positive value that an engaging and innovative social presence can bring.
The winners will be chosen by a committee of experts and industry specialists who will evaluate the applications.
